I really like this, it’s like a stripchart encoding colour as, well, colour. It’s surprising and fresh and simple.
Don’t forget, folks, that you can chop an image down to a tiny strip then extract the RGB values with your favourite data analysis software. This is a nice way of getting a colour ramp that you like by just sampling it straight from the legend. For example:
