Survival and slavery in a nutshell

I have to admit I have only just got round to reading last December’s issue of Significance magazine, which included this article which runs through the methods and rationales (and problems) behind survival analysis, building up quickly from Kaplan-Meier estimators through Cox regression to g-estimation, which is a more recent technique for causal inference. An interesting dataset following the lives of slaves on a Jamaican sugar plantation is used throughout. The tone is fairly light and quick, so if you want more details you’ll have to reach for a textbook – and don’t ask too many questions of the numbers they present, just let it wash over you to get the general impression of what’s going on.
